Publishers including BMJ Group and Sage will share 20M peer-reviewed research papers with AI company Redpine
- Major publishers strike deal with Redpine to provide AI agents with licensed access to peer-reviewed research.
- Publishers include BMJ Group, Sage, IOP Publishing, IGI Global Scientific Publishing, Wanfang Data, and RCNi.
- Redpine’s model increases accuracy and reduces hallucinations and errors.
- Team includes ex-Spotify, McKinsey, CERN, and Sana, with investors from OpenAI and Perplexity.
Six major publishers are among the content partners sharing over 20 million peer-reviewed articles with Redpine, an AI startup giving clinicians, researchers, and R&D teams access to grounded data from trusted sources.
BMJ Group, Sage, IOP Publishing, IGI Global Scientific Publishing, Wanfang Data, and RCNi have joined Redpine as content partners to license research for AI-driven scientific discovery. Redpine offers several access models, including pay-per-use via MCP and API and large-scale data licensing.
The research is licensed by Redpine, a Swedish company which raised an $8M seed round in April 2026 led by NordicNinja, with participation from Luminar Ventures and node.vc, and angels from OpenAI, Perplexity, Spotify, Sana, SiloAI, and Validio. Redpine is one of several Swedish startups, including Lovable and Legora, at the forefront of the global AI revolution.
Redpine’s pay-per-use approach allows each publisher to set the terms of what an AI agent can and cannot use, as well as pricing per transaction, with access running live through Redpine’s API and MCP server. This means an agent can retrieve and cite primary literature at the moment it answers, instead of relying on training data, reducing hallucinations and errors. An AI agent with access to Redpine Science was right 7.8% more often than the same agent relying only on what it already knew, averaged across repeated runs (ScholarQABench SciFact, a biomedical claim-verification benchmark). In AI, every percentage point of accuracy counts.
A paid service, Redpine shares the vast majority of its revenue with its publishing partners. After Redpine Science, the company will launch a number of other verticals in 2026 and 2027.
“The future of AI-driven scientific discovery should draw on all scientific research, without hallucinations and with both attribution and compensation to rights holders. This and a pay-per-use model is a game-changer for research teams,” said Anders Hammarbäck, Redpine’s CEO and co-founder.
What builders do with it
- Biotech. Drug discovery teams query decades of clinical literature in seconds, with citations that hold up.
- Clinical research. Trial design agents analyze thousands of prior trials to identify realistic patient populations and endpoints.
- AI labs. Deep research agents ground their outputs in primary, paywalled literature instead of secondary summaries of it.
AI biotech companies including StandardMedicine, AsedaSciences, Convoke, ArkusAI, HopeAI, Perceptic, and others are already using Redpine Science.
Redpine has also begun a collaboration with the Danish Center for AI Innovation (DCAI), which operates Gefion, Denmark’s sovereign AI supercomputer, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO. The first focus is to offer Denmark’s science and research ecosystem access to high-quality licensed data.
About the content partners
Each partner brings high-quality, peer-reviewed research in a discipline where precision matters.
- BMJ Group. Publisher of The BMJ and 80+ specialty journals, providing trusted, peer-reviewed clinical evidence since 1840.
- Sage. Sage has provided articles from over 400 medical and life sciences journals, including Mary Ann Liebert titles, as part of this pilot. Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement.
- IOP Publishing. The publishing arm of the Institute of Physics, IOP Publishing is a not-for-profit, society-owned scientific publisher. Its portfolio includes more than 100 journals spanning the physical sciences, from quantum and materials to environment and energy.
- Wanfang Data. One of China’s major academic research collections, it brings 30+ years of academic data expertise to empower global research and AI innovation with trusted, authoritative Chinese data. Its holdings span Chinese-language academic collections with particular depth in clinical medicine, pharmacology, and TCM, a large part of which rarely surfaces in English-language sources.
- IGI Global Scientific Publishing. Covering clinical and medical technology research within its STM publications, as well as research in Business & Management and Education & Social Sciences. Independent since 1988.
- RCNi. The publishing company of the Royal College of Nursing, RCNi publishes Nursing Standard and a portfolio of specialist, peer-reviewed nursing journals, providing trusted clinical evidence and practice guidance for nurses and healthcare professionals.
About Redpine
Redpine builds the knowledge layer for AI. The company licenses premium, non-public data from publishers, research institutions, and rights holders, then makes it available to AI companies and agents through API and MCP-based workflows, securely and at scale. Rights holders keep control over how their data is used and are compensated for every use. Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Stockholm, Redpine’s team brings experience from Spotify, McKinsey, CERN, Sana, Zettle, and Deloitte. In April 2026 Redpine raised an $8M seed round led by NordicNinja, with participation from Luminar Ventures and node.vc, and angels including leaders from OpenAI, Perplexity, Spotify, SiloAI, Validio, and Sana.
